Cranmore's History
Mount Cranmore is famous for its night skiing, as well as its Saturday night Cranapalooza, which features, fireworks,
magicians and other types of family friendly activities. Its history began in the summer of 1937, when businessman Harvey
Dow Gibson cleared trails for a new ski area. These were happy times in New Hampshire but hard times in Austria. Hannes
Schneider, creator of the famous Arlberg ski technique, had been thrown in jail by Hitler's army. Schneider had visited
America in 1936, where he wowed local ski instructors with the Arlberg Method of ski instruction.
Hearing of Schneider's plight, Gibson arranged to have Schneider brought to New Hampshire. When Schneider's train arrived
in North Conway, he and his family walked under an archway of ski poles, which was formed by local children. He soon became
the director of Cranmore's ski school. His innovative techniques for ski instruction and slope grooming are still a
tradition at Cranmore.
Terrain Parks
Cranmore has 3 different terrain parks, geared for different levels of skiiers.
- Lucky Loop is located on a beginner's trail, has just a couple of jumps and rails, and has its own tow rope.
- Other Side is on another Green trail, and in this writer's experience, is often closed.
- Darkside has more than 30 jumps and rails and can be accessed from both the quad and south lift. This is the most advanced terrain
park at Cranmore, and the location of all the terrain events.
Ski / Snowboard Rentals
In addition to numerous rental outfitters along Rt 16 South and North of North Conway, Cranmore has its own rental store.
